Schoenoplectus validus, commonly known as Lake Club-rush is a tall rhizomes sedge with upright green-blue foliage. It grows naturally n fresh water dams, swamps, lakes, creeks and on the edge of brackish water in coastal rivers and lagoons.

Grows in full sun to part shade, preferring moist, boggy soil. A great choice for wetland revegetation projects and can be planted in and around ponds.

It is also an important food source for a variety of animals, including waterfowl and other wetland birds.

Bush food:

  • Stem bases: Can be chewed or pounded. The tender base of the stem is eaten raw in salads.
  • Pollen: The pollen is used in soups or mixed with flour and used in making bread
  • Roots: Crisp and pleasant to eat

Germination: Sprinkle seeds on top of damp soil, 1mm deep, and cover very lightly with soil. Use a pot with a saucer of water underneath to maintain soil dampness. Once germinated keep it in a shady spot with adequate water.
