Coastal pigface also known as Kolbogo or Metjarak by the Noongar peoples, karkalla, pigface, sea fig, and beach banana, is a succulent groundcover plant native to coastal regions of southern and western Australia.

Grows to be about 10-30 cm tall and can spread to 1-2 meters wide. The fruit of the Karkalla grows to about the size of a grape, and turns a deep red when ripe.

Prefers a light to medium well-drained soil in an open sunny position. Excellent tolerance to sandy coastal exposure. Drought and frost resistant.

Packed with nutrients and easy to grow, it's the perfect addition to any sunny garden. The leaves can be eaten a variety of ways and provide a good source of vitamins and minerals. The fruits are also versatile, great for snacking or using in your favorite recipes. Whether you're a fan of salty or sweet, the coastal pigface has something for everyone.

Bush food: The leaves and fruits of the Beach Fig are edible and have a salty, slightly sour flavor. The leaves can be eaten raw, pickled, or cooked. They are a good source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, iron, and calcium. The fruits can be eaten fresh or used to make jams, jellies, and chutneys.

To enjoy them fresh, just hold one end and suck out the sweet pulp, or eat it whole — salty skin and all. Add it to your garden and enjoy the delicious and unique flavors of this coastal pigface.

Bush Medicine: The leaves can be pickled, as well as used like aloe vera to remedy stings, burns and skin irritations. Karkalla extracts have been shown to possess significant antioxidant, antiplatelet and anti-inflammatory activity.
