'QUWANDHANG' QUANDONG - NATIVE PEACH (Santalum acuminatum) Seeds

A large shrub or small tree to approx. 3 meters in heights. Small white flowers occur in cluster in Spring/Summertime followed by fleshy fruits 25mm in diameter, turning bright red when ripe. Highly ornamental tree for shade and shelter this species is a parasite and survives off the roots of other plants.

Tolerates poor soils and hot dry sites, attracts native birds and butterflies.

Bush food: The outer fleshy layer of the fruit is used to make jams and conserves, sauces and various confectionary products, the inner hard kernel is also edible high in protein and vitamin c. The flavour is tart reminiscent of peach, apricot or rhubarb.

Bush medicine: Centre kernels can be ground to create powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory pastes for treating skin conditions and toothaches, the roots are made into an infusion to treat rheumatism and the leaves to treat stomach aches. 

Germination: 

1. Stratification: Quandong seeds often require a period of stratification to break dormancy. To stratify the seeds, place them in a container filled with moist sand or peat moss. Keep the container in a cool location, such as a refrigerator, for about 4 to 6 weeks. This mimics the natural winter conditions that the seeds would experience in their native habitat.

2. Germination Medium: After stratification, prepare a germination medium. A mixture of well-draining soil, such as sandy loam or cactus mix, is suitable for germinating Quandong seeds.

3. Planting: Fill small pots or seed trays with the germination medium. Plant the Quandong seeds about 1 cm deep in the soil. Place one or two seeds per pot or cell, allowing space for the seedlings to develop.

4. Watering: Moisten the soil thoroughly after planting. Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged throughout the germination process. Avoid overwatering, as it may lead to rotting.

5. Light and Temperature: Place the pots or trays in a warm and well-lit area with indirect sunlight. Quandong seeds require warmth for germination, so maintaining a temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F) is beneficial.

6. Germination Time: Germination can take anywhere from several weeks to a few months, as Quandong seeds have variable germination rates. Be patient and provide consistent care during this period.

7. Transplanting: Once the seedlings have developed a few sets of true leaves and are strong enough to handle, they can be transplanted into individual pots or into a larger growing area.

8. Continued Care: Provide regular watering, partial sun exposure, and a suitable growing environment for your Quandong seedlings. They prefer well-drained soil and can tolerate both dry and sandy conditions once established.
