A prostrate spreading annual or possibly a short-lived perennial herb, typically grows to a height of 3 to 20 centimetres (1.2 to 7.9 in). Flowering between August and October producing yellow-green flowers.

The plant is often found over granite or limestone and has a scattered distribution throughout the Mid West and Goldfields-Esperance regions of Western Australia where it grows in sandy, loamy or clay soils.

Desert spinach produces a smaller, thinner and rounder leaf profile than the more common T. tetragonoides (warrigal greens).

Bush food: Edible leaves - All tetragons are edible as greens, although owing to their high levels of oxalic acid (just like spinach), they should be blanched and rinsed in cold water before consumption. Any dish that would use spinach can be substituted with any tetragon.

Germination: Pre-soak for 10 hours prior to planting
