Purslane is available in both Green and Golden leaved cultivars. There is no difference in taste between the two forms.
This drought tolerant plant self-seeds readily and grows as a low ground cover in the hotter months, filling in a gap when it’s hard to grow leafy greens.
Doesn’t need much maintenance for optimal growth as it is hardy. Can be harvested all year round. Easily foraged.
Small yellow flowers occur in the leaf bases from December-February
They prefer to grow in open sunny situations.
As a companion plant, purslane provides ground cover to create a humid microclimate for nearby plants, stabilising ground moisture. Its deep roots bring up moisture and nutrients that those plants can use.
This highly nutritious and valuable plant is easy to grow in any garden or pot.
Bush food: Purslane can be eaten raw or cooked and is very adaptable to any dish that calls for greens. It is good in sandwiches, stir-fries, omelettes, soups and pickles. It has a slightly sour and salty taste.
High in fibre and potassium and contain good amounts of magnesium, calcium and iron. The seeds can be collected and ground into a paste for cooking.
Germination: Purslane seeds take seven to 10 days to germinate between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. You can sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inches deep directly in the garden.
