Glischrocaryon behrii, or golden pennants, is a perennial native herb to 50 cm high, which spreads by suckering, native to southeastern Australia.

This hardy, drought-tolerant shrub produces vibrant golden-yellow flowers that brighten any landscape. Perfect for native gardens, wildlife habitats, or as a low-maintenance ornamental plant, these seeds are easy to grow and ideal for sunny spots.

Prefers gravel, loam, and sand, and can tolerate drought, lime, moderate frost, and wind. Can be found in coastal footslopes, plains, hills, and the second line coast. Thriving in Australia's rocky soils, its deep roots allow it to withstand dry periods. Flowering in spring, golden pennants’ vivid blossoms attract various pollinators, contributing to its survival in harsh environments.

In addition to its beauty, Glischrocaryon behrii has edible uses—its small fruits, recognised for their nutritional value can be eaten raw or used in preserves, offering a unique bushfood experience.

Bush Food: Edible fruit

Bush medicine:  As a medicinal herb for treating digestive disorders, skin diseases, and fever.

Germination:

  1. Seed Preparation:

    • Lightly scarify the seeds with sandpaper or a file to break the hard seed coat. This helps water penetrate and improves germination rates.
  2. Soaking:

    • Soak the seeds in warm water for 12-24 hours to further soften the seed coat.
  3. Sowing:

    • Use a well-draining seed-raising mix and sow the seeds on the surface. Lightly press them into the soil but don’t bury them too deep, as they require light to germinate.
    • Water gently to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  4. Position:

    • Place the seed tray in a warm, sunny spot with good airflow. Alternatively, use a propagator to maintain consistent warmth (18-22°C).
  5. Germination Time:

    • Germination can take 2-6 weeks, depending on conditions. Be patient and ensure the soil remains moist.
  6. Transplanting:

    • Once the seedlings have developed a few sets of true leaves, carefully transplant them into individual pots or directly into the garden in a sunny, well-drained location.

Proper care and patience will yield healthy plants ready to thrive in your garden!
